Read mode and other features

Read mode, social share and bugs fixes

changelog··2 min read

Since I published onwrite, I noticed many small issues that I overlooked. This is the crazy part about building software, it never look complete. Some of the issues was hard to spot before actually using the product as it should be used, for example: the URL was ignoring some characters like 'ç' or '~', so a word like 'preço' (price in Portuguese) would be written preo and ignore the ç entirely. This is the type of bug that could be caught only if I had tested in Portuguese, but when you write a software like this, this type or issue can pass unnoticed very easily.

This, and a few other issues, most visual issues were fixed, but I want to talk here about some cool features that was added since launch.

Social share

When I was developing this product I learned about OpenGraph, a site that allows one to past a URL and see how the post will look like when shared on social media. I thought it was a good feature to have natively in the project. So, I implemented it and I believe it can be very useful to give the writer a hint of how the post will look like when shared. It is very simple and you don't need to do anything to use the feature. Just look at the post settings, click the Social Share button or scroll down and see what it look like, then you add what is missing and improve the way you post will look when you share it. It's available on all plan with no extra cost.

Read Mode

One of the things I care the most about is the user experience. I want onwrite to be a place for short and long read as well. There are plenty of options out there for focus read, Safari for example has this feature natively, but other browser does not have. So, I thought it would be a good idea have this feature natively on the themes. Even though the themes are already very well designed to give the user a comfortable and pleasing experience when reading, some user may feel more comfortable reading on a clean and boring screen (I love it) so, why not?

These are some improvements that will make the product more complete and easy to use at the same time. In the next weeks and months, I will continue working to make this the best place for everyone seeking a quiet and clean online space.
